Use your Personal Development Plan to bring success!

What is a personal development plan? It is basically a map of your self improvement journey. It is very much like goal setting, except that it is for the area of personal development and involves a complete road-map rather than just listing aspirations or goals.

Although it is in essence a goal setting plan, however due to the nature of personal development, a slightly different approach would be more suitable and effective as opposed to using the goal setting method. Hence, the reason for having personal development plan.

For many people who are serious about success, goal setting is a must. However, many do not set goals for the area of their personal development. People normally have financial goals, health goals, career/professional goals, spiritual goals and relationship goals. However, they do not have goals for their personal development.

It is very important to have personal development goals because when we are in the midst of trying to achieve all the other goals, we often get caught up in the process and will neglect learning, improving, and developing new skills and abilities. In addition to that, once we start getting results and success, we will naturally start to relax, take it easy and get complacent. It is complacency that is usually the downfall of any successful person.

That is the main idea behind having a personal development plan. To ensure that we are consistently working on ourselves no matter what happens and to prevent us from becoming complacent. Here is the basic idea of a personal development plan;

1. Identify your current situation - What are your strengths, weaknesses, skills, abilities etc. To prepare your personal development plan, you will first need to identify what is your current level.

2. Identify where you want or need to be - What needs to be worked on for you to get to the next level. What are your weaknesses need to be addressed. What area is to be given priority for improvement?

3. Develop your roadmap - Finally, plan a roadmap on how to get from where you currently are to where you want to be as identified in step 1 and step 2. This means planning all your action items to take, the way to take the action, the resources that is needed, how to obtain the resources, a detailed schedule of all the things that you need to do and finally setting an overall time line on the achievement of the personal development goal.

The basic premise is pretty simple, however it is important that you spend some time on it and come up with a good plan so you’ll be headed the right way and not waste any time.

A personal development plan helps you ensure you are constantly improving your skills, abilities and knowledge. Because at the end of the day, it is your knowledge that ultimately affects the quality of your lives and your level of success you achieve. All us should have a personal development plan.
