Thinking About The Most Popular Toys Of Our Youth
Toys come and go with passing generations. We all had our favorite toys growing up. My favorite was the yo yo. There was something about that little wooden wheel that was hypnotic. You could spend hours upon hours totally zoned in on getting the yo yo to do the latest trick you heard about. Do you remember how to walk the dog?
Another long forgotten toy is the slinky. I don’t know how many of those springy things were actually sold. But, I am willing to make a bet that it was in the millions. Some genius invented this long spring like metal toy that was capable of traversing down a set of steps all by itself. Would you ever have thought that something so ridiculously simple would have become so incredibly popular? I am sure he made a huge chunk of change from that idea.
Do you remember the hula hoop? When was the last time you saw somebody playing with one? I guarantee it was quite a while ago. These things could probably keep you in shape if you got addicted to using one. It’s weird how the simple toys were the ones that really caught on big.
Who had a GI Joe doll when they were a youngster? I hear the original ones are worth a ton of money on the internet these days. There are probably a lot of objects we had as children that sell for a mint on the auction sites these days.
When I was a kid, I remember everyone having a Lionel Train set around the Christmas tree. I had a cousin who had an entire village setup in his basement so he could work on the railroad throughout the whole year. I never could quite understand what it was about trains that made everyone want one.
What about those electronic football games with the vibrating board? You know the ones. They had the little football players that you would setup on the green metal football field. Then you turn the thing on and it began vibrating. The vibrations made the players move around the field. Man that thing was crappy compared to today’s games. But it was fun though.
Were you one of the many children that had a bag of jacks? The bag had a drawstring on it. Do you even remember how to play a game of jacks? You would bounce a rubber ball on the ground. Then you try to grab as many jacks as possible while the ball was still airborne.
Were you one of those children who had some Lone Ranger things? Lone Ranger figurines were very popular. Do you remember watching the Lone Ranger shows on your old television set?
