Weight Loss Is What You Make Of It

While not an easy task, losing weight is also not as difficult as many of us believe. While fancy plans have been all the rage for some time, scientists are now telling us that losing weight is less about exactly which foods we eat (and in what combinations) and more about how much we eat, plain and simple.

While many of us jumped on the low carb bandwagon in recent years, or even visited centers and weight loss programs to help us lose weight, what matters is how many calories we eat. These studies have shown that the reason people lose weight on a low carb diet isnt because they eat fewer carbs. Its because a low carb diet naturally decreases the amount of calories eaten as well.

New studies have shown that calories are all that are really need to be counted in order to lose weight. You can still follow a plan and you can still visit the weight loss center, but whats really important is that the calories are reduced. Thats what will lead to weight loss. Once they understand the importance of calories, many dieters still visit the weight loss center, or even follow the low carb plan, but they focus as much on counting calories as anything else.

But many of us can create our own diets, based on the nutritional guidance we get from books or magazines. We might consult a dietitian, and create our own diet based on our eating preferences and needs. But there are some important considerations to make.

Its important when you count calories that you make each bite count. That is, each bite should include important nutrients. Because calories are restricted, there are fewer opportunities to get good nutrients in with the reduced calorie intake. The solution, then, is to ensure that each bite, that each meal, contains essential nutrients. Make sure theres a good balance of vital vitamins, minerals, protein, calcium and fiber.

Diet experts say that people should count calories, but should also do this formally. That is, studies have shown time and again that people lose more weight when they count calories and record them. Whether that is through an electronic device (a calorie counter, or your iPhone, for instance) or by writing everything down in a notebook, the idea is that recording and counting calories reminds you of what you have eaten and what you can still eat each day. It also makes you accountable for the food you eat.

The bottom line is weight loss is more about wanting to lose weight and taking the right steps than it is about the fancy plans you throw into the mix. People who are really serious about losing weight (and who back up that desire with dedication and purpose) often find that the plan they follow is irrelevant. What is relevant is how many calories they eat, plain and simple.
